About Our Institution

Established in 1962, Government Medical College, Kottayam (GMCH) stands as one of the leading medical institutions in Kerala, India. Affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences, our college has been at the forefront of medical education, research, and healthcare delivery for over six decades.

Our campus spans over 150 acres, providing a conducive environment for learning and innovation. The institution is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and offers undergraduate (MBBS), postgraduate (MD/MS), diploma, and super-specialty courses.

The attached teaching hospital, with a capacity of over 1200 beds, serves as a tertiary care referral center for the central Kerala region, handling more than 500,000 outpatient visits and 40,000 inpatient admissions annually.

Academic Programs

GMCH offers a comprehensive range of medical programs designed to meet the highest standards of medical education and produce competent healthcare professionals.

MBBS

The 5.5-year undergraduate program includes 4.5 years of academic study and 1 year of compulsory rotating internship. Annual intake: 250 students. Curriculum follows NMC guidelines with emphasis on clinical exposure from early years.

Cardiology

24/7 cardiac emergency care, Cath lab, CCU with 30 beds, pacemaker implantation, and echocardiography. Performs 2000+ cardiac procedures annually.

Neurology & Neurosurgery

Advanced stroke unit, EEG, EMG, and dedicated neuro ICU. Microsurgery facilities for brain and spine disorders. Epilepsy monitoring unit available.

Pediatrics & Neonatology

Level III NICU with 50 incubators, pediatric ICU, and specialized care for congenital disorders. Vaccination clinic handles 300+ children daily.

Radiology & Imaging

3 Tesla MRI, 64-slice CT scan, digital X-ray, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, and interventional radiology services. Tele-radiology for remote consultations.

General Surgery

Advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic surgical facilities. 10 operation theaters with modern equipment. Trauma care center with 24/7 emergency surgery.

Ophthalmology

Our Emergency Department is one of the busiest in Kerala, handling over 150 emergency cases daily. The department is equipped with:

  • Dedicated trauma bays with resuscitation equipment
  • Separate medical, surgical, pediatric, and obstetric emergency
  • 24-hour pharmacy and laboratory services
  • Ambulance service with advanced life support
  • Direct communication with operation theaters and ICUs
Ambulance Services

Fleet of 15 ambulances including 5 with advanced life support systems. Dial 0471-2555555 for emergency ambulance. Average response time: 12 minutes in Kottayam district.

Pharmacy

24-hour inpatient and outpatient pharmacy. Generic medicines available at subsidized rates. Automated dispensing system reduces waiting time. Online prescription refill available.

Nursing Care

1:5 nurse-to-patient ratio in general wards and 1:1 in ICUs. Specialized nurses for dialysis, oncology, and critical care. Continuous nursing education programs.

15+ ICMR and DBT funded clinical trials in areas of infectious diseases, oncology, and cardiology. Recent trial on "Efficacy of Ayurvedic adjunct therapy in Type 2 Diabetes" published in Lancet Regional Health.

Faculty published 120+ papers in indexed journals in 2022-23. H-index of institution: 45. Collaborations with Johns Hopkins, CMC Vellore, and AIIMS Delhi.

Central research lab with PCR, flow cytometry, and cell culture facilities. Animal house registered with CPCSEA. Biostatistics and epidemiology support unit.
